The Building and its History
In the 1970’s this beautiful four story building in colonial Old San Juan housed the Centro Nacional de las Artes. The Centro was an artist collective that ran an art gallery, workshops for printing and silkscreening, and dance and music classes.
In the spirit of this history we invite you to experience bohemian living in Old San Juan.
The Nuyorican Café has established itself as one of the most exciting venues of our capital city.Due to the excellent quality of the productions shown, the Café has created an environment of artistic and cultural credibility.Come visit us and be part of the vibrant community of artists, musicians, bohemians & alternative travelers that collaborate in making the Nuyorican Café a magical place.
For this community, the Nuyorican Café is Da House…and sometimes as the house Salsa Orchestra, The Comborican, finishes an aggressive version of El Cuarto de Tula, the audience roars and the singer screams “Comborican in Da House”…people feel part of something special that is happening there and then and that requires their presence.
Old San Juan and Attractions
Old San Juan is a five hundred year old city with lots of flavor, character and swing to prove it.Full of art galleries, antique shops, outdoor cafes, and beautiful spanish colonial architecture…it is easy to have a great time without leaving the walled city.
If you want to venture outside the walls, walk to El Escambron Beach and surf at “la 8” in the morning, take a bus to Santurce, drink a papaya shake at the open market and visit the Museum of Art, head back to OSJ and hang out with other travelers on our rooftop lounge where you can have a couple of beers and watch the sunset and the spectacular views…take a nap and head down to the Nuyorican at 10:00 pm.The next morning, after sleeping in, we recommend a $5 asopao de camarones at Los Yeyos or Jerked chicken up the block at Fatties.
If you want to treat yourself with the money you are saving on accommodations, some of Puerto Rico’s best restaurents are around the corner.Try the ceviche in AguaViva, the duck nachos in Dragon Fly, or the pasteles at El Jibarito.
